Once the seat of the Holy Roman Empire, Prague recently completed its difficult journey back to the cultural, economic, and political heart of Europe when the Czech Republic became one of the newest members of the European Union in May of 2004. After 300 years of domination by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and a further fifty years under the boot of Soviet Communism, the Czech lands are poised on the brink of an astounding rebirth.

After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, led by playwright-President Vaclav Havel the Czechs established a modern parliamentary democracy, and set upon a firm course of re-integration into the mainstream of western culture. Its history rich with diverse cultural and political influences, the Czech nation, and especially its multi-spired capital, is a fascinating work in progress.
